The No-Escape Theorem: Why Your AI Will Always Forget

Then you added the next thousand documents. Then ten thousand.

Suddenly, the agent started “forgetting.” Not because the data was deleted, it was right there in the database, but because it was getting crowded. Retrieval results started returning semantically similar items that were factually wrong. Forgetting curves that looked suspiciously like human memory started to appear.

You thought it was a bug. You tried to “fix” it by increasing the nominal dimensions (1024 to 4096), tuning the HNSW parameters, or switching to a Knowledge Graph.

It didn’t work.

It will never work.

Ashwin Gopinath, founder of Sentra and former MIT professor, just published a paper that provides the formal proof: The No-Escape Theorem.

The Geometry of Destiny

The core of the theorem is simple but devastating: Any memory system that retrieves information by semantic similarity (meaning) is mathematically guaranteed to exhibit interference-driven forgetting and false recall as the knowledge base grows.

Here is why:

  1. Finite Dimensionality: While we talk about “4096-dimensional embeddings,” language itself only has about 10 to 50 truly independent dimensions of meaning. This is the Effective Dimensionality ($d_{eff}$).
  2. The Crowding Problem: When you pack millions of memories into a space with only 15 meaningful directions, they must overlap. New memories land near old ones not because they are related, but because there is nowhere else to go.
  3. Geometric Vulnerability: Interference isn’t an engineering flaw; it’s a property of the manifold. Every model Ashwin’s team tested, from vector DBs to Knowledge Graphs, converged to the same $d_{eff} \approx 10-15$.

The result? Power-law forgetting ($b \approx 0.3-0.7$) that perfectly matches human forgetting curves from 1885. This isn’t AI being “artistic.” It’s geometry asserting its limits.

The industry is currently pivoting to GraphRAG as the “savior” of memory. But Gopinath’s team proved that Graph Memory (MiniLM + PageRank) produces forgetting curves squarely in the human range. Why? Because the underlying representations are still semantic embeddings. A Knowledge Graph built on dense vectors is just semantic memory with extra steps. It inherits the same geometric vulnerability.

What This Means for Your Architecture

If you are building agentic systems for your organisation, stop trying to find the “perfect” embedding model. It doesn’t exist. Instead, you must build for the principled solution:

  1. Decouple Storage from Reasoning: Use high-fidelity episodic records (plain text, markdown, precise logs) for storage.
  2. Use Semantics for Generalization only: Let the “Mind” hunt for patterns, but let the “Body” verify the facts.
  3. Integrate Symbolic Verifiers: Use BM25 (keyword search) or structured query layers as a mandatory fallback. They are “immune” to the geometric interference that kills vector search.

The “No-Escape Theorem” tells us that the price of meaning is interference. You can’t avoid paying it. But you can choose how you pay it: by building architectures that respect the limits of geometry rather than pretending they don’t exist.
