The Zombie Org Test
If the CEO disappeared for a month, would the company notice, or just keep shambling forward?
If every senior leader disappeared for 30 days, would the organisation adapt or just keep doing last monthβs work on autopilot?
A living organisation feels the absence. It senses the gap, redistributes, adjusts. A zombie organisation does not notice. It shambles forward on momentum alone.
Gary Hamel argued in HBR that most organisations are built for discipline, not resilience. Discipline keeps the zombie walking. Resilience makes it alive.
Remove a layer. If nothing changes in two weeks, that layer was not leading. It was occupying a seat on the org chart.
Alive organisations adapt. Dead ones just have not fallen over yet.
